treegrains - treegrains

These are a instrumental trio consisting of two guitarists and drummer. The sound these guys posses is fairly paradoxical, minimal sounding and yet mostly busy pretty straight up math rock. The tunes are much more interesting than the record cover... treegrains

Lightning For Legs - Atomics

Two piece UK based experimental sounding math, taking aboard a fair amount of noise rock alongside post rock elements. Pretty rocking except for the end of the last track which turns in to a bit of a ambient type wall o noise.. bar that a pretty sweet three tunes. Atomics

Eight Million Kami - Split with Betterment

Checked out these guys demos a while back and they have been coming on nicely. Experimentation heavy maths teaming with talent. They share this split with Betterment who are also worth checking out. Split

Half Milk - Kept Mang

Quite liked the stuff these guys have been doing and had covered their last outing. Unfortunately it sounds like this is the last record from these as a band. Shame really as these do a good job rocking the math and post hardcore vibes with the emo vocal stylings. I'm happy to report they leave us on a high note however, bar  the odd slightly directionless moment this is pretty epic. Up for grabs on their bancamp name the price. Kept Mang  

Holow Ran - Cold Phase online

A intricate clean math sounding two piece from Costa Mesa, California. Some pretty scatty moments, with some cool changes within. Ups on the bandscamp name the price. Cold Phase Online  

Murder In The Red Barn

I don't often do posts on older tunes, but I've done a few on bands connected with hero of a hundred fights, which these are.. Plus these are seriously good in their own right, and also their tunes are fairly hard to come by. So these were about early 2000s era and kinda played a experimental math rock infused with post hardcore and such. Did a bit of searching about and put a file together with everything I could find which consists of a self titled ep, get in before the rain and some unreleased tunes. These are one of those bands really worth getting to know if you didn't already. I would say they were underrated, but I think it's more a case of under listened..  Collected MITRB

Chia Roscuro - Southern Dogface

Mathy four piece from South Carolina. These guys mix up all sorts from prog to to funk and reggae.. They manage to pull it off nicely too. Be quite interesting to hear what these do with more time put into the recording. Up on the bandcamp for full on free. Southern Dogface

Colours - Tetrachromacy

These kind of remind me a bit of future 1983 which in my book is a really good thing. Would place these a bit more along to post hardcore end of the spectrum. Good tunes for sure though. Tetrachromancy

Crucial - Crucial

A four piece from Collinsville. Rocking an instrumental mix that incorporates math, jazz and prog sounds. Couple of long tracks on here, one being over seventeen minutes, which still manages to go down well without sounding drawn out. The whole record was recorded live, not that you can really tell.. Shortmenn - Shortmen

One man project from Columbus sort of experimental come math rock also bit post punk like pretty cool. On the name the price line at bandcamp. Also worth checking out the dudes blog he has a fair few other musical escapades going on There. Shortmen

Trails - Kalevela EP

Orlando based duo racking up their first EP with this. Some Jazzy math rock utilising some cool electronics and with a sound that is pretty darn uplifting, nice if you live somewhere that seems to be permanently winter like it is here..  Chill it over to bandcamp to grab this for name the price. Physics House Band - Horizons / Rapture

Had a lucky escape this week from my laptop dying on me and trying to take with it my music collection! Would not have been a happy bunny..

Anyway on to business. I have been much anticipating the release of this record as have many people from the looks of things. Chances are you've already checked these guys out and are familiar with their brand of Jazz fusion with it's incorporation of math rock and prog styles in places. OK so I guess the big question is was it worth the wait and did it live up to expectations?? Well... Yes and No. Just let me elaborate on this a mo. This is a record that in places is pretty darn mind blowing, and is generally technically spot on. But I do have to say that in agreement with other honest reviewers there are filler tracks and yes to me they do seem to not fulfil their purpose of connecting the different parts of the record together, I'd probably go as far to say that they actually break the flow of the record breaking up it's energy and drag for me.

So the bottom line for me is this, the tracks that have been floating around the net a while are still awesome but every time I play this I will be making use of the skip button.. I really wanted to be blown away by this and really wanted to do a glowing review, maybe that's part of the disappointment for me. At the end of the day it is definitely  worth the £4 fee and I will be checking their next release and still hold out much hope of it being mind blowing they defo have it in them it's a first pop. Postmadonna - Postmadonna

New album from this Seattle based four piece. These rock the progressive and math rock mix up. More over the place than the last record, which to me had a ton of promise, but was, well just too short. Happily though the promise from their ep is delivered on this album. Postmadonna

Eight Million Kami - Demo 2013

Classing these as one's to watch.. These have put out a couple of releases prior to this on bancamp, all basic recordings but brimming with ideas and clearly some skills behind them, these demos fall in the same category. Think progressive rock that incorporates math and post rock, jazz n such. Anyways one's to watch. All of their tunes are up for free on their bandcamp. Demo 2013

Lisabi - Senseless

First off thanks to Max for the heads up on these guys.
So these are quite a progressive rock affair, a six piece hailing from Brazil. This record starts off pretty relaxed, but don't let that fool you they really do break into the prog nasty. The whole record has an underlying latin feel and is also pretty funky. They top this off with some punky elements and add in the extra instrumentation of keys, sax, trumpet and samples, this all adds up to being pretty sweet. They have this up for name the price over on the bandcamp, do check them out. Senseless

Cleanup - Wherever Your Place May Be

Mostly instrumental math rock that is really quite catchy, I'd be tempted to say math pop if there were more vocals.. that would also be kind of ignoring the progressive slant running through this. Basically good and intricate without out becoming too introverted. These are a trio from Texas, they released this back in July last year.. Check um. Wherever Your Place May Be
